August 2, 2027 — Southern Spain (Andalucía)

Travel & Logistics Guide

The big one. Over 4 minutes of totality along Europe's most popular holiday coast. This guide covers everything you need to get to southern Spain, find accommodation, and navigate what will be one of the most-watched eclipses in history.

Flights & Airports

Southern Spain is one of Europe's best-connected holiday destinations. Millions of tourists fly into the Costa del Sol every summer, so airport capacity is excellent — but eclipse demand will push it to the limit.

Best Airports for 2027

Málaga — Costa del Sol (AGP)

Top Pick

The main gateway for the 2027 eclipse. Málaga airport handles over 20 million passengers annually with direct flights from hundreds of cities across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. It sits right on the eclipse path with 4+ minutes of totality nearby. This is where most eclipse chasers will fly into.

Sevilla (SVQ)

Andalucía's second major airport. While Sevilla itself is north of the totality path, the airport offers good connections and it's only a 2-hour drive south to the center line. A strong alternative if Málaga flights sell out or become too expensive.

Gibraltar (GIB)

Small airport with limited flights (mainly UK connections via British Airways and easyJet), but Gibraltar is right on the eclipse path. Walk across the border to La Línea de la Concepción for a Spanish viewing experience. An interesting option for UK-based eclipse chasers.

Jerez de la Frontera (XRY)

Serves the Cádiz area with Ryanair and other budget carriers. Close to the eclipse path and less crowded than Málaga. A smart alternative if you're targeting Cádiz, Tarifa, or the western end of the eclipse track.

Book Flights Now — Seriously

The 2027 eclipse is being called the eclipse of the century. Over 100 million people live within a day's drive of the totality path. Flights to Málaga for late July / early August 2027 will sell out or become prohibitively expensive. Book as soon as your plans are firm — even 18 months out is not too early.

Trains & AVE Network

Spain's high-speed AVE trains connect Madrid to Andalucía's major cities. The journey is fast, comfortable, and avoids road congestion entirely.

Key Routes

Route Duration Type
Madrid → Málaga 2h 30min AVE
Madrid → Córdoba 1h 45min AVE
Madrid → Sevilla 2h 30min AVE
Córdoba → Málaga 1h 00min AVE
Málaga → Cádiz 4h 00min Regional
Málaga → Marbella (bus) 1h 00min Bus

Málaga ↔ Marbella: No Direct Train

There is no rail link between Málaga and Marbella / Estepona. Use the Avanza bus service (roughly 1 hour) or rent a car. The coastal AP-7 motorway connects them directly.

Consider iryo and ouigo

Spain now has competing high-speed rail operators — iryo and ouigo — in addition to Renfe's AVE. Compare prices across all three for Madrid–Málaga and Madrid–Sevilla routes. Competition has driven prices down significantly.

Driving & Car Rental

A rental car gives you mobility along the Costa del Sol and the flexibility to reposition for weather on eclipse day. However, expect heavy traffic.

Key Routes

  • AP-7 / A-7 (Coastal Motorway): The main coastal highway connecting Málaga, Marbella, Estepona, and on toward Cádiz. This will be the busiest road in Spain on eclipse day.
  • A-45 (Córdoba → Málaga): Connects the inland AVE hub of Córdoba to the coast. A strategic route if you're coming from central Spain by car.
  • A-92 (Granada → Málaga): Links Granada to the coast. Around 1.5 hours. Good option if you want to combine the Alhambra with eclipse viewing.
  • A-4 / AP-4 (Madrid → Cádiz): The southern highway from Madrid through Córdoba to Cádiz. Around 6 hours for the full drive.

AP-7 Will Be Gridlocked

The AP-7 coastal motorway between Málaga and Tarifa will experience unprecedented congestion on August 2, 2027. This road is already busy in summer with tourist traffic. Add millions of eclipse visitors and it will be at a standstill. Do not attempt to drive along the coast on eclipse morning.

Where to Stay

Book 12-18 Months in Advance

The Costa del Sol is already Europe's number one summer holiday destination. Every August, hotels across Málaga, Marbella, and the surrounding coast operate at near-full capacity. The 2027 eclipse will create demand unlike anything this region has ever seen. Accommodation will sell out and prices will spike dramatically. If you are reading this and have not booked yet — do it today.

Accommodation by Area

  • Málaga city: Largest hotel supply in the region. The city center and port area offer the best selection. Consider apartments for longer stays.
  • Marbella & Estepona: Luxury resort hotels, many on the beachfront. Closest to the center line of totality. Expect the highest prices.
  • Torremolinos & Fuengirola: More affordable alternatives east of Málaga, still on the eclipse path. Large package-holiday hotel stock.
  • Cádiz: Historic city with a boutique hotel scene. Smaller capacity but a fantastic atmospheric choice. The old town offers unique character.
  • Inland options: Ronda, Antequera, and the white villages of Andalucía have charming rural hotels at lower prices. You may need to drive to the coast for the best viewing, but they offer a more authentic experience.

Alternative Accommodation Ideas

If hotels are sold out, consider: Airbnb apartments, camping and caravan parks (plentiful along the coast), or staying in Sevilla/Granada and taking a day trip. Some eclipse chasers even book cruise cabins — an option that guarantees accommodation and a sea-level viewing angle.

Cruise Ships & Sea Viewing

Multiple cruise lines are expected to position ships along the eclipse path in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea. Viewing from the open sea has advantages:

  • Unobstructed horizons — no buildings, hills, or light pollution from the ground
  • Mobility — the ship can reposition for clear skies if weather threatens
  • Accommodation solved — your cabin is your hotel, no need to fight for shore-side rooms
  • Unique experience — the moon's shadow racing across the sea surface is breathtaking

Watch for announcements from major cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Holland America, and others have done eclipse cruises before). Expect dedicated "eclipse cruise" itineraries departing from Málaga, Barcelona, or Lisbon.

Strait of Gibraltar Viewing

The eclipse path crosses the Strait of Gibraltar, meaning both the Spanish and Moroccan coasts will be in totality simultaneously. This is an extraordinary location — watching the sun disappear with Africa on one side and Europe on the other. Tarifa and boat tours from Tarifa will offer this experience.

Eclipse Day Traffic & Tips

This Will Be the Busiest Day in Spanish Tourism History

The Costa del Sol already attracts over 13 million tourists per year. The 2027 eclipse will bring a surge of additional visitors — estimates suggest 1-2 million extra people will attempt to reach southern Spain for this event. Road and transport infrastructure will be under extreme strain.

Survival Guide for August 2, 2027

  • Be in place 24+ hours before. Arrive at your viewing location by August 1 at the latest. Eclipse morning will be too late to travel.
  • Do not plan to drive along the AP-7. The coastal motorway will be a parking lot. If you must drive, use inland routes and arrive before dawn.
  • Book a return for August 3 or later. The post-eclipse exodus will be brutal. Give yourself an extra day.
  • Hydrate relentlessly. August on the Costa del Sol means 30-35°C heat. Carry at least 2 litres of water per person.
  • Sunscreen and shade are essential. You will be outside for hours waiting for totality. Bring a hat, umbrella for shade, and SPF 50+ sunscreen.
  • Have offline maps. Mobile networks may be overloaded. Download Google Maps/Waze offline maps for Andalucía before you leave your hotel.

August Weather Advantage

The silver lining: August weather on the Costa del Sol is almost guaranteed clear. Málaga averages only 2mm of rain in August with just 8% cloud cover. The odds of a clear sky for totality are among the best of any eclipse in modern history.
